2022 annual review

2022-12-28

2022 has been rather uneventful.

I wrote 7 blog posts this year. For this year I’d like to highlight two posts: one about hot reloading Gunicorn apps and another about manipulating data using VisiData. I’d like to write more technical posts; I have a couple in the pipeline but haven’t found much motivation to push them over the finish line.

I read 7 new books, or about a dozen if I count rereads. This year has been an even slower one for reading than the last.

I daresay I’ve gotten pretty darn good at Tetris since last year. I have a dashboard that tracks my Tetris progress. My 40L personal best has improved from 55s at the beginning of the year to 38.352s.

Last year I learnt to cycle for the first time. I’ve since built a bike, a Surly Cross-Check, and have been riding much more regularly since. Building a bike is almost always going to be more expensive than simply buying a pre-built one, but a good thing about building it is that I’m now pretty confident I can fix and repair any issue on my own. A long term goal I have is to go on an overseas cross-country bikepacking trip. I expect I’m still about a year away from doing so; maybe in 2024.

I took a two week trip to Thailand and Cambodia earlier this year. It’s the first extended solo trip I’ve done, and it went great! I’d love to do another one soon. It’s a good thing I learnt to cycle last year, because I ended up cycling some 40-ish kilometers around the Angkor temples.

I’ll be moving out of my parents place near the beginning of next year. The property market is insanely hot right now, so it’s honestly not a great time to be renting. Fortunately I have a sizeable enough cushion that I think my financial risk is extremely minimal. Moving out is scary, but also very exciting.

I’m climbing harder than ever. I think I can do better though. Next year I’d like to focus on improving even further. I’m moving to a new place next year that’s within a short walk to two climbing gyms, so I expect the reduced friction will allow me to climb more often. I also initially intended to spend a month in Krabi this December, but decided to postpone the trip to next year instead; I don’t feel strong enough yet and need more time to prepare.

My work in Carousell has remained largely unchanged. I’m still acting as the tech lead for my team. InstantBuy, the big bet feature we worked on last year, is being sunsetted. My team will be working on its successor in the coming year. We had layoffs in December and it remains to be seen what the company mood and dynamic will be like going forward.
